Vallejo City Unified School District's 7-11 Committee Presents Final Report on Property Consolidation to Board
VCUSD's 7-11 committee presented its final report at Wednesday's Board of Education meeting, sharing three recommendations regarding district properties.
VALLEJO, Calif. - The Vallejo City Unified School District's (VCUSD) 7-11 committee presented its final report at Wednesday's Board of Education meeting, sharing three recommendations regarding district properties. While the Board accepted the report, they did not vote on designating the five VCUSD properties as surplus. The five properties proposed for surplus were Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy, Loma Vista Environmental Sciences Academy, Vallejo Charter School, Steffan Manor Elementary, and Pennycook Elementary.
District staff will return in December or January to discuss additional schools considered surplus. In parallel, staff is developing a comprehensive plan to ensure continued services for impacted students and families.
“We are incredibly grateful to the 7-11 committee for its dedication and the challenging work they have done to evaluate our district’s properties,” VCUSD Superintendent Rubén Aurelio said. “Its efforts have been instrumental in helping us make informed decisions. As we move forward, district staff will begin evaluating other schools for potential surplus, ensuring that all actions are aligned with our goal of providing the best possible education for our students while using our resources best.”
The 7-11 Committee, named for the requirement of having between seven and eleven members, evaluated the district's real property assets, including the potential closure and consolidation of specific school sites. This evaluation was based on enrollment numbers, proximity to other schools, and facility conditions. The equity impact analysis focused on Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy, Loma Vista Environmental Sciences Academy, Vallejo Charter School, Steffan Manor Elementary, and Pennycook Elementary.
The three recommendations shared were:
- Consolidation of Schools: Consolidate Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy into Federal Terrace Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and other middle schools.
- Relocation of Grades 6-8: Relocate grades 6-8 from Loma Vista Environmental Sciences Academy to Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy.
- Waiver for Competitive Bidding Requirements: Support the Board's application for a waiver of competitive bidding requirements on surplus property, allowing the district to seek the most advantageous offers.
